The Red Pony from Longmire, Maggie’s from Wild Hogs, and Young Guns; Madrid & Cerrillos, New Mexico- A movie day on Day 24

Mine Shaft Tavern (Longmire’s Red Pony)

On Day 24, we drove from Grants to Santa Fe, New Mexico. We set up at Santa Fe Skies RV Park. Then, we headed about 20 minutes to eat at the “Red Pony” from the TV show, “Longmire”. We are fans of the show and were so excited to learn they filmed here. It’s not actually called “The Red Pony”, but the Mine Shaft Tavern.

Our lunch at “The Red Pony” was delicious. My New Mexican spicy meal at Cafecito the day before left my stomach a little mad at me, so I ate Mac and cheese and a salad.😆

Jim had the hatch chile burger famously mentioned on Longmire. Hatch chiles are a staple in New Mexico and even show up on their license plates.

The restaurant is in the quirkiest of towns, Madrid (not pronounced like the city in Spain). The streets are lined with old houses that are unique, local shops.

In Madrid, they also filmed “Wild Hogs” with Tim Allen. We got to see Maggie’s Diner featured in the movie. It’s just down the road from the Red Pony.

Driving back to the RV park, just a few minutes from Madrid, was the town of Cerrillos. We stopped there because a sign said it was historic, and we learned they filmed the 1988 movie, “Young Guns” there. (Weird connection- Lou Diamond Phillips was in both Longmire and Young Guns🤪). The town seems to have been frozen in time, and it was so fun to explore. We took lots of pictures. If you’ve seen Young guns, you’ll probably recognize some of these places. Later that evening, we watched Young Guns and recognized a lot of the places we had seen!

Our RV park is very nice. The sites are separated by trees and on different levels. It also has a nice dog park. It was $76 a night after taxes and our Good Sam discount. We were so excited when we heard they had live music… but it turned out to be original folk music, so not our cup of tea, and we didn’t stick around for it. 🤦‍♀️

I can’t believe we’re at day 24 of our roadtrip already— and it’s day 42 out of our house, and day 33 in the camper. There’s no way we’re tying my parent’s record of 72 days!!😆
